Behind the Scenes at the Pacific Merchants Holiday Photo Shoot

Monday, November 18th, 2013

Good afternoon, readers!

You may be noticing some new photos popping up on our site lately. Here’s why! Last week at Pacific Merchants headquarters we had a super fun, exciting and productive photo shoot in preparation for the holiday season. We shot tons of new products, holiday specials, and some easy DIY holiday flower arrangement techniques.  Check out our Mason Cash Fall Floral Arrangement post for detailed instructions, and enjoy the images below for some serious inspiration! I know we’re excited!

Take a look at some of the behind the scenes shots (and finished shots) that we captured last week. I love that these images (especially the first one) really capture the spirit of holiday entertaining without being too over the top Christmasy.  Every time I flip through them I get a bit more inspired for my own holiday decorating. Sure, it’s a week before Thanksgiving, but I love the idea of using fresh fruit to deck my halls, and am absolutely inspired by some of our holiday gift ideas. I mean, seriously, who wouldn’t want to unwrap a big, beautiful salad bowl on Christmas morning?

Fall Flowers: Pacific Merchants’ Flower Arrangement Tutorial

Friday, November 8th, 2013

Dear readers,

Happy Friday! Hope everyone had a productive, awesome, inspiring week. #TGIF

With both Thanksgiving and winter holidays just around the corner, it’s time to start decorating.  I love creating my own floral arrangement when I entertain; yes it takes a lot prep work, but it totally doubles as a de-stresser and I even look at flower arranging as a little “me time” while I’m going crazy trying to prepare.  As they say…stop and smell the roses! I sure did when I was making this floral centerpiece.

One of my coworkers taught me a really cool arrangement trick during our last Pacific Merchants photo shoot, and I want to share it with you.  We wanted a shorter, fuller arrangement so we decided to style our flowers in one of our Mason Cash Classic Cane Mixing Bowls.  In this DIY tutorial I used our size 30 mixing bowl so that the flowers spill over the bowl a little bit, making for a dramatic and luscious table centerpiece.

Here’s what you’ll need:

-Flowers

-Clear tape, or seasonal washi tape

-Scissors (preferably a stronger pair that can cut through flower stems)

-A bowl or wide mouthed jar (I suggest our Classic Cane Size 24 Mixing Bowl, our Acacia Wood Bowls or our 1L Open Storage Crock. Really, the beauty of this technique is that any kind of bowl works! This is a great opportunity to get creative.)

1. Pick out some flowers!  I went to my local florist and hand selected all the flowers to use in my centerpiece.  I opted for a mix of late fall/early winter colors to complement the recent change in seasons.  I also added some greens, eucalyptus in this case, to fill in some of that extra space and give a cooler feel to counter all the warm colors. Eucalyptus has a nice and gentle scent to it and dries really well. If you want to keep things lower budget, focus on one or two eye-catching flowers and lots of small, cheap filler flowers and greens. As long as the colors look nice together, even the cheapest flowers look incredible. I love Trader Joe’s for their reasonably priced flowers.

2. With your tape of choice (I used washi so you can better see what I’m doing!) start creating a grid across the bowl. This will help you place flowers and keep them in place.  Alternatively, use floral foam, which you can most likely find at your local craft store.

3. Time to style your flowers!  I generally try and go for a balanced arrangement in color, size, shape, and placement of flowers.  For any beginners out there, here are ten tips on flower arrangements, brought to you by the one and only Martha Stewart (.com).  The only downside of using colored tape is that sometimes it shows through if you don’t pack your flowers in tight enough, or if the tape folds over the edge of the bowl too much.  You can definitely hide the tape with flowers, but just a reminder to keep an eye out!

4. Bask in the colors, scents, and glory of your arrangement.  It’s such a treat for me to create something like this; it really helps me wind down after a busy day!  It takes some creative energy, but it’s an indulgent and relaxing process.  These centerpieces make great gifts as well, especially for those who love to cook and bake;  Our bowls are a staple for any serious kitchen when it’s not full of beautiful flowers! It’s a gift that does double-duty.

Have a great weekend, folks.

Kilner Jar Terrariums

Friday, November 1st, 2013

Winter has decided to come two months early.  Don’t get me wrong, I love winter time, but it’s not even Thanksgiving yet.  It’s SO COLD out!  #FirstWorldProblems. With that in mind, I’m trying to create as many fall projects as possible before it starts to really become winter. Let’s take the changing of the seasons and the start of a fresh month as an opportunity to display the best that the fall has to offer. Kilner Jar Terrariums (or, as I’d like to say, Jarrariums) make the absolute perfect display for the beauty of the season. Also, they make a fantastic gift!

I’m a huge fan of terrariums; they allow you to showcase elements of natural beauty, and share that beauty with others. Each terrarium is a vignette, a playground for your imagination.  The small scale of most terrariums also plays into this sense of wonder; just by looking at one, you may be transported to a forest or tropical island. They’re kind of like nature’s snow globe!  I’ve decided to make some for around my house as well as my Thanksgiving table.  They are perfect as hostess/host gifts, or as a group activity for the whole family to participate in this Thanksgiving.  It’s super easy, inexpensive, and you barely need any supplies to craft.

What you’ll need:

Kilner Jars (I used a .5 Liter Kilner Preserve Jar)

-Any outdoor/natural relic you want to display (leaves, pine needles, pine cones, flowers, fruit…)

-Terrarium Tweezers, or cosmetic tweezers (the longer the better)

1. Take a nice nature walk outside (or through your local craft store)!  I’m lucky enough to live by some wooded areas, so I gathered some pine cones, needles, and twigs while I was on a hike. Gather some items you’d like to display in your jarrarium.

2. Start organizing pieces you think look good together!  We’re about ready to put everything into the jar.

3. Start arranging your nature elements in the jar. For a more permanent (and less wiggly) setup, feel free to glue any of the pieces to the sides of the jar so they stay put.

4. Voila!  Look at that beauty.  Also try both a smaller and larger sized terrarium with our .25 Liter Preserve Jar, and our 1 Liter Preserve Jar.  It’s seriously easy to make something really beautiful with this project, so don’t worry if you’re not a regular crafter.

Happy November 1st, everyone!  Let’s kick this month of with a bang.  Or a jarrarium. #win
